When a mysterious message forces them on a journey to an isolated planet named Reyet, Quinn’s plans quickly change.

A coup on Reyet throws everything into chaos, leaving Quinn and Mira evading enemies they know, and some they don’t, including the planet itself. Now, time is running out for Earth, Fosaan, and Reyet, and there may be no place left in the galaxy that’s safe.

Author Interview

  1. What is your writing process? Do you aim for a word count daily or maybe just a scene?

On a good day, I aim for 1000 words, but that means I often have to write more than a thousand, because I often edit as I write. Some writers don’t edit until they finish a first draft. I just can’t work that way. It’s a lot easier for me to go back and forth between editing and drafting new material.

  1. What sort of research did you do for this book?

Since the story is science fiction but set on a planet where people don’t have much access to technology, I didn’t have to do as much research for this as I might for other stories. The research I did do broke down into two very different parts. One part was considering how people live in a hot dry climate. The most fuin part of thinking about that was getting ideas on what types of clothes people wear that would fit a futuristic society. I found some terrific work by up-and-coming fashion designers. Even when I don’t end up writing long descriptions, details like clothing help me picture the scene in my head. I made a Pinterest board for some of the things I found: https://www.pinterest.com/deegarretson/torch-world-book-2-reyet-trap/

As to more scientific research, I did a little on neurotoxins and other aspects of disease transmission to come up with ideas for the mysterious illness affecting certain people on the planet. No Pinterest board for that!

  1. What are you working on now? Any chance of a third book in the series?

I just finished a draft of the third book and it should be released in 2019. Like a lot of readers, I don’t want a series to end, so it was fun to continue with this one, especially when the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance.  I also have another book coming out in 2019, a historical I like to describe as a YA Downton Abbey with spies. It was also a lot of fun to write. Science Fiction and historical writing have quite a bit in common-You have to create worlds you’ve never experienced.

  1. How did you come up for the idea of your book?

I’ve always loved science fiction and I am also a huge STAR WARS and STAR TREK fan, so writing a science fiction series has long been a dream of mine. I wanted to explore a story that involved two people from very different cultures and very different histories who have to figure out where they belong and if they can overcome all the obstacles to be together. I have a degree in International Relations, which is largely the study of the clashes of different cultures, so the idea for the plot arose from that.

  1. Just for fun — what TV shows or movies have you really enjoyed (or disliked?) recently?

I love movies and some TV so this is my kind of question. I like old movies and I like adventure movies, not surprisingly. I just watched an old WW2-set movie called OPERATION CROSSBOW. I could swear George Lucas saw this movie at some point and the end scene of A NEW HOPE with the death star was influenced by the final moments of this movie. Heart-pounding! I’ve also been watching THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE. Somehow, I’ve never read anything by Philip K. Dick so once I finish watching the series, I want to read the book it was based on.

  1. About the Author

Dee Garretson writes for many different age groups, from chapter books to middle grade to young adult to adult fiction. She lives in Ohio with her family, and in true writer fashion, has cat companions who oversee her daily word count. When she’s not writing, she loves to travel, watch old movies, and attempt various kinds of drawing, painting and other artistic pursuits.

Enchanter Excerpts:

#1

“Are you scared of me? Is that it?” As if to make a point, he covered the distance between us in three short steps, and backed me off into the landing to the stairwell behind me, stopping only when our bodies were a few inches from coming into physical contact. The invigorating scent of his cologne invaded my nostrils, causing my mind to go into total and complete turmoil.

I shut down, unsure how to react. I hadn’t anticipated being cornered in a vulnerable spot where we were shielded from view. Normally, I was a sucker for guys who smelled as good as he did, but this was Brandon Morris. I couldn’t decide whether to lean closer and inhale slowly, or scream and push him away.

“Are you?”

I wanted to deny his accusation, but he could see the truth in my eyes. It was pointless to pretend as if he hadn’t just sent my heart into a race. By then he could see how badly I shook. I could not disguise it fast enough for him not to notice.

“Should I be?” I asked softly, fear forcing my voice to quake.

#2

Fighting the nausea threatening to consume me, I made a mad dash for alleyway’s entrance. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something move. I shrieked and sprinted faster, almost colliding into the thin man who appeared out of nowhere in front of me. I managed to stop in time to crash into him, but as soon as I caught sight of his profile I regretted not plowing right through him.

He looked like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. Tall, long, and lanky, with shoulder-length white hair, unnaturally pale skin, and eyes that gave the impression of missing irises, he was no less horrifying than the black figure I’d seen at the stairwell or the ghostly woman in my bedroom. He was clad from top to bottom in dark clothing, which gave him all the more menacing feel. As he stood, staring at me in a way that communicated I was about to become food, I could have sworn my stomach dropped to my feet. This was no ordinary attacker. He didn’t have rape or mugging in mind, but something much more sinister.

#3

Movement several yards behind him caught my attention and I glanced around his left shoulder to the woods, noting the quick blur of a figure darting from behind one tree to another. Something was off about the way this person rushed by. It sparked a sense of familiarity that horrified me.

“Brandon, I don’t think we’re alone anymore,” I murmured as another flash of white scurried ever closer. It was too dark for me to determine who it was, but I was certain of one thing: we were being watched.

“What…?” The meaning of my words didn’t immediately dawn on him.

“Someone’s out there.”

Brandon spun around abruptly. He scanned the area briefly as he backed into me while sucking in air. His suddenly rigid posture warned me whoever was out there was not friendly.

Without a single word of explanation, Brandon turned to me and took my hand in his, pulling me down the path we’d used to get to the gazebo. He towed me along in a haste, leaving me no room to protest, or figure out what the hell was going on. A weird, high-pitched hissing sound emanated from somewhere behind us. It startled me and I was tempted to glance over my shoulder, but Brandon’s next words stopped me.

“Don’t look, Leah!” His tone was as serious as I’d ever heard it, which freaked me out even more. What was he so scared of?

It was Stella Gullaksen’s final break before starting her freshman year at college. Joining her best friend, Jill, and Jill’s family aboard the STARKISSED, Stella wakes to a violent storm that capsizes the boat over a hundred miles off the New Jersey shore.

As the waves haul her under Stella knows that she is going to die. Instead, an unusual current drags her deep into the underwater canyons of the Atlantic Ocean. Powerless against the raging waters, she is suddenly sucked into a ventilated cave. One by one, Jill and her family also emerge in the sunken cavern.

With only a faulty diving flashlight to keep oblivion at bay Stella and her best friend’s brother, Colin, search the cave in hope of finding a way back to the surface. What they discover, however, is that they are not alone. There are other survivors in this subterranean grotto–survivors spanning decades of maritime disasters.

Will this discovery prove salvation, or have they all been condemned to the same fate? A grim finale at the bottom of the sea?

Read Below for an excerpt from Beneath:

Colin moved, shaking Stella from her daydream.

“Come on. Stay close,” he instructed.

Close. There was no problem with that command. There was no way she was being left behind in this subterranean abyss.

As they started forward, her toe clipped Colin’s heel causing her to stumble and plant a palm on his back for support.

“A little too close,” Colin muttered over his shoulder.

Stella’s hand snapped back. It wasn’t the first time she had inadvertently touched her best friend’s older brother.

In high school, she had taken many fishing trips with the Wexlers. It was common for them to spend the night out at sea so that Jill’s dad could reach the best fishing spot. The cabin was tight on the STARKISSED, and normally Colin would sleep on the bench seat beside the kitchen table while the three females monopolized the v-shaped bed.

On one occasion she, Jill, and Anne Wexler retired into the cabin for the night, while Colin and his father remained up on deck. Stella and Jill took the bunk on one side of the V, and Anne slept on the other. At some point the boat pitched slightly on a wave and Stella rolled off her tight perch into the gap between the mattresses. Expecting to hit the floor she instead landed on something pliant. Something strong. Something that smelled like the sea and Irish Spring.

Stella was a junior at the time. She had already been kissed and maybe pawed a little, but she still had very little knowledge of what a man felt like. Now she was pinned to a wide chest with her legs twined between his. Planting her palms on the carpet, she clambered for balance. Heat rushed to her cheeks and it seemed every move she made to dislodge herself only made matters worse.

Colin didn’t say a word. Powerful arms hefted her back onto the mattress and just like that, his silhouette climbed through the hatch and back onto the deck.

Ever since that incident she had a tough time looking him in the eye. It wasn’t just because of the awkwardness of the situation. The truth she concealed was that she had a big-time crush on her best friend’s brother.
