The Science Club

by C.A. King

The Science Club is out to prove there is one universal equation for love.

It started as a joke. It continued as a tradition. Somewhere along the line, invites became an honour and joining an elite privilege. Now, the all-female member roster is shaking up the status quo.

Ten years after inception, they have a formula. All that’s left is to test their theory and the resident bad-boy just became their lab rat.

I was diagnosed with clinical depression after the loss of my mother, father and husband within three years of each other; all to cancer. 24/7 in-home care, coupled with the loss I felt, left its mark on my psyche.

Depression takes up a lot of my life. Reading and writing are the only things I have found that help (in connection with regular medication), even if only for a short time. To escape to a different world can make a big difference in my mood in real time.

To put things in perspective, when I was at my lowest point, I couldn’t open mail, talk on the phone, or even drive to the store. Walls of sadness surrounded me. As they closed in, tears would fall. There didn’t need to be a reason or trigger.

People ask me why I started writing. My answer is simple: I wanted to create a world into which other people with similar problems could escape. I wanted to share the one place that had helped me for many years.

I have always said that as long as one person finds a little bit of happiness out of my books, I am, in my opinion, an accomplished author. The same is true for every writer out there. Please don’t ever let anyone tell you different.

I read books as well as write them and have visited the worlds many different authors have created. Those worlds not only make me feel better, but give me the strength to face real life again. I want to thank everyone who writes—I want them to know they are making a difference.

Fast forward to today…

her oddities mask a secret hidden deep within her mind—one that could defeat
even the cleverest of psychics.

When a
mysterious circus arrives in town, Caitlyn is immediately drawn to it. While

and urges her to stay away. But soon, Caitlyn finds herself ensnared in the
show and the Ringmaster himself.

Recognizing
Caitlyn’s powers for what they are, and believing they are the ones he has been
searching for, the Ringmaster is determined to claim them as his own. Trapped
within the circus and the Ringmaster’s devious grip, Caitlyn realizes that to
escape the seer’s foretold fate, her only choice is to fight. Banding together
with Bevier, an imprisoned psychic, Meg, an eccentric seamstress, and Daniel, a
handsome magician, Caitlyn falls into the Psychic Realm to thwart the
Ringmaster and stop the show before they succumb to his control and are trapped
forever in his spectacle of souls.

Morgan is Missing (Kayla Falk Series #2)
by K. Hanson
Genre: Adult/New Adult Thriller
Release Date: August 2018

Summary:

Kayla Falk is trying to move past the traumatic events of her mission in Syria and settle into a comfortable engineering job. However, when Morgan Bellamy, the younger sister of Kayla’s late best friend, disappears while on vacation, Kayla doesn’t hesitate to jump into action to find her. As Kayla investigates, she learns that Morgan has become trapped in a hellish human trafficking situation. Kayla is determined to find Morgan before she slips into the shadows forever.

Content Warning: This book is about sex trafficking. While I avoid explicit, graphic depictions of sexual violence, due to the nature of the subject matter, it is definitely implied that it takes place.

Author Interview

  1. Tell us about your writing process. Do you aim for a daily word count, page count, or a couple of scenes each day?

When I’m in drafting mode, I typically shoot for 2,000 to 3,000 words per day. Once I’m really up to speed, I can do 3,000 words in a little over an hour. That may sound a bit crazy, but it takes work to get to that point. I make sure to set aside a consistent time each day to write. For me, that means doing it in the morning before work. If I do it before work, that means I don’t get derailed by a tiring day at work or something that comes up afterward. I also write by using sprints, starting with 5 minutes and working my way up to 30 minutes. During these sprints, I focus on nothing but getting as many words on the page as possible. No checking Facebook, phone, email, etc. I also turn off my internal editor and just go. I find that this helps with both the efficiency and quality of my writing, as I get into the groove of the book and just let the story flow out of me.

  1. What gave you the inspiration for your book? Is it part of a series?

Yes, Morgan is Missing is the second book in a series, but can be read without reading the first book. With this series, I want to both entertain and educate the reader. After the first book featured the conflict with ISIS, I wanted to tackle something closer to home with the second. That led me to choose human trafficking as an under-discussed but critical issue right here in the United States.

  1. Are you a pantser or a plotter? A bit of both?

I’m becoming more and more of a plotter, as it guarantees that I don’t miss anything important in the plot and it helps me write more efficiently since I know exactly where the story is going. The funny thing is that Morgan is Missing is my most “pantsed” book, then I went on to draft the next book in my fantasy series and that was the most heavily planned book so far. Having done both ways back to back, I definitely prefer to be a plotter.

  1. Do you prefer a certain type of music to listen to when you’re writing, or are you better with silence?

Listening to the right music is an important part of my writing process, as it helps me achieve the right mood for whatever scene I happen to be writing. For Morgan is Missing, the playlist I used while writing is fairly haunting and sad, as fits the subject matter of human trafficking. I won’t go through the whole list, but I will name a few highlights. Topping the list is a beautiful cover of Sweet Child O’ Mine that fits the mood. I also have some of Johnny Cash’s slower songs, some chilling violin covers of various songs, and classical music that fit.

If you want to listen to the full playlist, you can see it here:

  1. What book(s) are you reading now?

Right now, I’m working my way through the Dresden Files series and am loving it!

  1. Anything else you’d like us to know about this book or any others (past or future)?

Morgan is Missing is a pretty heavy book, considering the subject matter of human trafficking. If you want something a bit lighter as a chaser, you can check out my fantasy novel, Storm Raven, which is the first in a series starring a badass, sassy pirate captain. The second book in that series is with my editor now and will likely be out early next year.
